Colors & Hues

White (colorless) diamonds are rare and highly valued, as they allow maximum light refraction, giving the diamond a brilliant sparkle.

Fancy diamonds come in a wide range of colors, including yellow, brown, pink, blue, green, purple, red, orange, and even black.

The intensity and saturation of color vary, with shades ranging from faint to vivid.

Each color results from trace elements (e.g., boron for blue, nitrogen for yellow) or structural anomalies that impact light absorption.

Fancy colors like vivid blue, pink, and red are among the most valuable due to their scarcity and vibrant tones.

Sourcing Area

Diamonds are mainly sourced from:

  • Russia (38 million ct/yr),
  • Botswana (23 million ct/yr),
  • Congo (16 million ct/yr),
  • Australia (12 million ct/yr),
  • Canada (11 million ct/yr),
  • Zimbabwe (10 million ct/yr),
  • Angola (9 million ct/yr),
  • South Africa (8 million ct/yr),
  • Namibia (2 million ct/yr),
  • and Sierra Leone (0.6 million ct/yr).

The famous Argyle Mine in Australia provided the world's finest fancy pink, fancy yellow, and fancy brown diamonds.

Cuts & Shapes

White Diamond Color Grading

White Diamond Color Grading

The most popular shapes for diamonds are (ranked from most to least popular):

Round, Princess, Cushion, Oval, Emerald, Marquise, Pear, Asscher, Radiant, Heart, and Trillion.

The cut quality grading system evaluates how well a diamond's facets interact with light, affecting its sparkle and brilliance. Grading typically includes five levels:

  • Excellent/Ideal: Maximal brightness & fire.
  • Very Good: High-quality cut with slightly less sparkle.
  • Good: Reflects much of the light but lacks some brightness.
  • Fair: Allows more light leakage, diminishing brilliance.
  • Poor: Lacks brilliance due to significant light leakage.

White Diamond Color Grading

White diamonds are graded on a D to Z color scale by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), with D being completely colorless and Z showing noticeable yellow or brown tints.

  • D-F (Colorless): Highest grade, with no visible color.
  • G-J (Near Colorless): Slight color detectable under magnification; appears mostly colorless to the naked eye.
  • K-M (Faint Color): Light hints of yellow or brown visible, typically in larger stones.
  • N-R (Very Light Color): Noticeable color but still light.
  • S-Z (Light Color): Obvious yellow or brown tint.

Clarity Grading

A diamond's clarity grading assesses the presence of internal inclusions and external blemishes that can affect a diamond's appearance.

The clarity scale, developed by the GIA, includes:

  • Flawless (FL): No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification.
  • Internally Flawless (IF): No inclusions and only minor surface blemishes visible under magnification.
  • Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2): Minute inclusions that are extremely difficult to detect under 10x magnification.
  • Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2): Minor inclusions that are somewhat difficult to see under magnification.
  • Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2): Noticeable inclusions visible under magnification, and in some cases, to the naked eye.
  • Included (I1, I2, I3): Obvious inclusions that may affect transparency and brilliance.
